Got a writer who loves Blogger?
No problem: just "grab" her RSS feed. Feed.Us will check the feed every 20 minutes for new items, import them, and publish them to your site.
RSS importing is also great for importing archives from other systems.
Proceed to the "Import" tab in Feed.Us. The first option is "Atom/RSS".
To add a new RSS feed to import, click "Add New" at the top. And then fill out the following fields:
- Name: Enter a name for this RSS Feed. This is used as a label.
- Rss Link / Location: Enter the link or URL of the RSS Feed.
- Export Only Check this if you don't want to save the content in Feed.Us. You can still Export the feed to your website.
- Categories Select the section & type the categories you'd like to apply to your imported content
- Active or not? This tells Feed.Us to keep importing or pause importing.
- One Time Import? This is when you want to import once, not ongoing.
- Use RegExp: - Technical term - does the filter string contain a regular expression?
The following are optional choices (click "Show Advanced"):
- Status The status you'd like to apply to your imported content (Created or Draft )
- Number of Items to Import If you only want the past 20 items, enter "20"; enter "0" if you want everything.
- Date to Start Importing Enter the date you want to start importing from the feed. You could choose a date in the past, for example if you want to import all the entries for the past year. Or you could choose a date in the future, for example if you wanted to set up a "Feed of the Week" feature.
- Import Filter Import an item only if it contains these words or phrases.
- Remove Text Remove any occurence of this text from any feed items you import.
- Replace Text Replace any occurence of the Remove text in any feed items you import.
So there's a lot of cool stuff you can do here. For example, you could set up a "Feed of the Month" feature by importing twelve feeds and setting the Date to Start Importing to the first of each month. You could send a feed right through Feed.Us and onto your site by selecting Export Only here and then using [[LINK: Export RSS]].
Import Filter, Remove Text, and Replace Text give you a lot of options. What if you want posts about your company from a particular feed, but people keep spelling it wrong! Set the Import Filter to "ThingieTech" (your company) and "ThingieTush" (the unfortunate mispelling). Set Remove Text to "Tush", and Replace Text to "Tech" et voila! Your Aunt Margie can visit your site with confidence.
Note: In order to make it totally automatic, You should set the cache settings in your Feed.Us script to automatically expire. This way new items from RSS will publish automatically. See more about caching options here.
Reminder: You need to have permission to import and publish copyrighted items.
